How to go viral on TikTok with podcast clips, and what a viral score can and cannot tell you

By Updated 5 min read

There is no guaranteed way to go viral on TikTok, and anyone promising one is guessing. What TikTok does say is that its For You feed weighs how viewers interact with a video, including how long they watch and whether they finish it, more heavily than most other signals.1 So give every podcast clip the best chance: post original moments from your own show, hook viewers in the first five seconds, tell one small story with an ending, caption every word, and use two or three relevant hashtags.2 This guide sets out what TikTok itself says, how to apply it to podcast clips, and what a viral score is useful for.

What TikTok says the For You feed looks at

TikTok's help page on recommendations lists three kinds of signal for the For You feed:1

  • User interactions: what viewers like, share, comment on, and watch in full or skip.
  • Content information: sounds, hashtags, the number of views and the country the video was posted in.
  • User information: device settings, language, location, time zone and device type.

TikTok says that for most users, interactions, which can include time spent watching, are weighted more heavily than the others.1 An older TikTok newsroom post adds two points worth knowing:3

  • Finishing a longer video from beginning to end is a strong signal.
  • Follower count is not a direct factor, and neither is whether your earlier videos did well. A bigger account may still get more views, because more people follow it.

Some videos are allowed on TikTok but are not recommended in the For You feed. For podcasters, the one that matters most is originality:

  • Unoriginal or reused material with nothing new added is not eligible for the For You feed.4
  • TikTok's Creator Academy counts as unoriginal: content copied from others, content largely repurposed without creative edits, compilations that add little, and content with someone else's visible watermark or logo.5
  • Post what you made or have the right to share. TikTok removes content that infringes someone else's intellectual property.4

In practice: clip your own podcast, not someone else's. Export clean files rather than re-posting a video downloaded from another app with its watermark. If you use AI to make realistic-looking scenes or people, TikTok requires you to label them.4

Low views do not always mean a problem. TikTok says a video with few views may simply have had little engagement, and suggests checking your analytics.5

How to cut podcast clips for TikTok

  1. Pick a moment that stands on its own. One idea, one story or one strong opinion, with no setup needed. TikTok suggests structuring videos like a story, with a beginning, a middle and an end.2
  2. Open on the strongest line. TikTok's Creator Academy says hooking viewers within the first 5 seconds is very important for views and watch time.2 Start on the surprising claim, the question or the punchline, not on "So, yeah".
  3. Cut the dead air. Pauses, false starts and filler words give viewers a moment to swipe away.
  4. Caption every word. TikTok says over 30% of its survey respondents watch videos on mute and rely on captions for context.2
  5. Frame it for the phone. Vertical 9:16, with the speaker centred and clear of the on-screen buttons.2 Our social video sizes guide has every platform's numbers.
  6. Write a clear description and two or three relevant hashtags. TikTok says that when it comes to hashtags, less is more.2
  7. Keep it as long as the moment needs. Uploads can run to 60 minutes,6 but TikTok encourages experimenting with length to suit the video, and the hook matters at any length.2

Myths worth dropping

  • "You need a big following first." TikTok says follower count is not a direct factor in For You recommendations,3 and its Creator Academy says you do not need a million followers to reach the For You feed.2
  • "More hashtags means more reach." TikTok suggests two or three relevant ones.2
  • "Repost what is trending." Reused material with nothing new added is not eligible for the For You feed.4
  • "It needs a polished studio look." TikTok says the level of production is up to you, and that phone footage can work as well as professional equipment.2

What a viral score can and cannot tell you

podswitch gives each clip it picks a viral score from 0 to 100, with a band and the reason it was picked:

  • High: 80 and above.
  • Good: 60 to 79.
  • Fair: below 60.
A clip card in podswitch titled “Are we all going to die because of AI?” with a viral score of 85, High, and the explanation of what the score means.
A clip from our own sample episode, scored 85 (High), with what the score means.

What it can tell you. The score is how likely the clip is to do well on social media, as judged by the AI that picked it. It reflects what usually works in short video: a hook in the first few seconds, one clear point with a payoff, and a moment that makes sense on its own. The reason on each card tells you why the clip was picked, so you can check whether you agree.

What it cannot tell you. The score is given when the clip is picked, before anyone has watched it. It cannot know who TikTok will show the clip to, what else is posted that day, or how your audience will react. It is a guide for choosing what to post first, not a prediction of views.

A sensible way to use it:

  • Post High clips first, then the Good ones that fit your audience.
  • Read the reason, not just the number. A Fair clip about your guest's specialist topic may suit your audience better than a High one.
  • Let your analytics decide. After a few weeks, your own results from TikTok tell you more about your audience than any score.

Clips picked, cut and captioned by podswitch

On paid plans, podswitch reads your episode, suggests the moments most likely to work as short clips with a hook, a reason and a viral score, and builds them: pauses cut, the camera on whoever is talking, and captions in your style in vertical, square or landscape. Nothing guarantees a clip will go viral, and you still choose what to post. See social clips for the details.

Common questions

How do you go viral on TikTok?

Nobody can promise it. TikTok says its For You feed is shaped mostly by how viewers interact with a video, including how long they watch, whether they watch to the end, and whether they like, share or comment. The best you can do is post original clips that hook viewers in the first few seconds and give them a reason to stay.

Do I need lots of followers to go viral on TikTok?

No. TikTok says follower count is not a direct factor in For You recommendations, although an account with more followers may still get more views because it has a bigger audience. TikTok's Creator Academy says you do not need a million followers to appear on the For You feed.

Can I post clips from other people's podcasts on TikTok?

Only if you have the right to share them. TikTok says you should post content you created or have the right to share, and that unoriginal or reused material with nothing new added is not eligible for the For You feed. Clips with someone else's visible watermark count as unoriginal.

What is a viral score?

In podswitch, a score from 0 to 100 that the AI gives each clip it picks, with a band (High from 80, Good from 60, Fair below) and the reason for the pick. It is a guide for choosing which clips to post first, not a prediction of views.

How many hashtags should I use on TikTok?

TikTok's Creator Academy suggests two to three relevant hashtags per video, and says less is more.
